Surround sound for your Mac

Many PC owners have multichannel sound cards and 5.1 (or higher) speaker systems connected to their machines. Why can't you do that on a Mac?

Until now, your only option has been to use HDMI. To do this, you need a Mac capable of outputting audio over HDMI, and either an HDMI cable, or a Mini-DisplayPort to HDMI cable for those machines without built-in HDMI ports. But what if you can’t or don’t want to use HDMI…?

Mac Mini

This is not just a headphone socket. It's also an optical S/PDIF connection, which you can use with a Mini-TOSLINK to TOSLINK cable to connect your Mac to your Hi-Fi.

Sadly, without Aura, you get 2 channel stereo.

With Aura, you get full 5.1 surround sound*.

‡ if you have a machine from 2016 or later, it may not have an optical connection — check the Apple Tech Specs website if you're unsure (it should list digital or optical output under the 3.5mm audio jack); machines without built-in S/PDIF may work with a USB audio adapter

* requires a Dolby® Digital™ compatible A/V receiver or surround amplifier with a TOSLINK optical input; not all applications support multichannel audio

Where do I connect it on my amplifier?

Amplifier

You're looking for an optical input like this.

There's usually a black shutter over the input, which will move out of the way when you insert the TOSLINK cable, which should click into place. The cable will only fit one way around.

All connected, what next?

You can try Aura for free for 30 days. After that, you’ll have to pay to keep using it.
