Using iDefrag with File Vault

If you use the Create Boot Disk option in iDefrag to make a Flash stick, and the disk you wish to defragment is encrypted using File Vault, you may find that it doesn’t show up in the list of disks when you start iDefrag.

The reason this happens is that your computer won’t mount the File Vault disk automatically (since it isn’t your boot disk, and it doesn’t know the password). To fix this, when you start from the Flash stick, instead of going straight to iDefrag, start Disk Utility, select your disk in the list on the left hand side of the window and click “Mount”. Disk Utility will prompt you for the password, and will then mount the disk, and you can then quit Disk Utility and start iDefrag.
